Bling for the Rest of Us!

corum-flip-it-pink_white-watch.jpgI was flipping through some channels a few days ago and happened to pause for a moment on some MTV spot. The show was exploring the life of one of America’s rich little 16-year-old girls (of whom I’d never heard. I’m pretty sure this show was her 15+ minutes of fame).

Not only did daddy buy his little girl a brand new custom 6-door hummer and spend more than $300,000 on a “Sweet 16” birthday extravaganza, he also gave her a blinging $20,000 Jacob & Co watch, studded with diamonds and various other gems. Interestingly enough, her new watch was a cheapy compared to daddy’s $275,000 timepiece!

Though most of us regular folks can’t go out and purchase a $20,000+ watch on a whim, Bidz.com makes it easier for us to own fine timepieces to fit our budget. Every day we offer new options for bidders to choose from and every day you can save a bundle. Take some time to browse through some of our watch auctions today. Happy bidding!

Diamonds for April

Diamonds are the birthstone for April. Because of such I have always been jealous of my little sister, but that’s another story for another day.

Diamonds have been cherished by royalty over the past 3000-4000 years, but in recent centuries diamonds have made a huge stand in the worldwide jewelry market. The word diamond comes from the Greek word “Adamas,” meaning unconquerable and indestructible. If ever a stone was true to its roots, this sparkling beauty certainly is!

Diamonds are a symbol of love and romance (causing one to wonder why the stone was assigned to April instead of February, the month of love). Through history, there have been several famous diamonds—and I’m not talking about the Heart of the Ocean. Diamonds like the Star of Africa, a pear shaped diamond cut from the 3,106-carat Cullinan diamond (the largest diamond ever found!). Another famous diamond is the Excelsior, most likely the second largest diamond ever found—though this stone was cut into 21 smaller stones. Others include the Great Mogul, the Darya-i-Nur, the Koh-i-Nur and, of course, the Hope diamond.

Keep your eyes open for diamonds this month and good luck bidding!

Defining Precious Stones

emerald-ring.jpgThere are two categories of gemstones: precious and semiprecious. But did you know that there are only four types of stones widely accepted and characterized as “precious”? It’s true. Of all the gemstones mined, collected, sold, traded and valued in the world there are only four valued enough to be considered precious!

So which lucky four made the cut? Those four stones considered precious are emerald, diamond, ruby and sapphire. These four stones are highly valued worldwide for their hardness and rarity. Diamond wins for hardest mineral and though the gem itself is not entirely rare, the clear white variety most preferred by jewelry lovers today is certainly difficult to come by.

Though not accepted across the table as precious stones, there are a few more stones out there considered by some to be precious. These include both varieties of corundum and precious opal. In general, however, diamond, ruby, emerald and sapphire make up the precious stone category.

History of the Diamond

I’ve recently read a book called Master of the Game. The book explores a world-wide conglomerate which started its business in diamonds in South Africa. The book certainly enlightens the reader on the history of the diamond rushes in the 1800s and the sacrifices our obsession with these stones has called for over the centuries.

“Diamond” is derived from the ancient Greek word adamas which means “invincible.” Almost 50% of the world’s diamonds originate from central and southern Africa, but diamonds are also found in Canada (who knew, eh?), India, Russia, Brazil and Australia.

Diamonds are the hardest known substance on Earth. We wear them as jewelry and use them to saw through tungsten (which is why the woman’s wedding ring will always be superior to her husband’s tungsten counterpart). In fact, the only material that can cut through diamond is…diamond.

Diamonds can range in color from black (it’s not really black) to blue (have you ever seen the Hope Diamond? Hello!) to crystal clear. Diamonds are about as versatile as gems come and have no shelf life so they can span generation after generation after generation. After generation. You get the picture!

Why We Love Tennis Bracelets

Like diamond studs, the tennis bracelet is a jewelry staple. But why is that? One word: simplicity.

All staples are staples for the same reason: they are simple. Because of simplicity these pieces can be worn over and over without anyone catching on or becoming bored. Though it is still worn by tennis stars like Serena Williams during matches, the tennis bracelet is a favorite accessory by many a woman—athletic or otherwise. It’s simple enough to wear for almost any occasion with almost any outfit, but classy enough to solely accessorize a gown on the red carpet.

The tennis bracelet gained it’s namesake from an accident that occurred during the 1987 U.S. Open. Pro tennis champ Chris Evert was wearing a gorgeous diamond bracelet which accidentally broke during the game (imagine that). The match was interrupted to allow Evert to recover her tumbling diamonds. Thus it became known as the tennis bracelet!

Check out online jewelry auction daily for great deals on top quality tennis bracelets. But do be careful if you wear them during athletic events!
