Jewelry Buzz: Nicole Richie

That’s right. Recent jewelry news is that Nicole Richie, daughter of singer Lionel Richie, new mother of one and sometimes friend of Paris Hilton will be introducing her new jewelry line in Fall 2008.

Yes, it seems every star and starlette today has chosen the multiple-lines-of-income way of life. Having connections can make you a singer, a writer, an actor/actress and apparently even a designer of jewelry, clothing and whatever else you might fancy.

Richie’s plans include a jewelry line of 50 pieces (to begin with, of course). The line will consist of fashion jewelry, but certainly won’t be priced for the faint hearted! Richie’s pieces will be available at high-end boutiques like Kitson and Fred Segal, but keep your eyes on Bidz.com in the future for your chance to own a Richie original at a fraction of that boutique price!

When You want to be Unique

Everyone likes to be unique. Wanting to be unique, however, does not mean you have to be eccentric or outlandish!

For instance, I own two particular necklaces that I am complimented on every time I wear them. One piece is a simple sterling silver hibiscus charm my husband bought for me on our honeymoon in Hawaii. The other is a corded necklace randomly beaded with different wood beads; some round, some oval; some natural wood colored and some metallic, some colorful. Either of these necklaces will match with anything I own and I wear them all the time.

My simple hibiscus pendant is not so much a unique piece—at least I didn’t think it was. Apparently here on the mainland it’s a treat for the gazing eye. The wood beaded necklace, however, is colorful, unique and always makes for a great conversation starter.

Unique jewelry is all the rage today. From funky rings to mysterious necklaces and even hair jewelry, the fashionista is on the lookout for something different. In my recent jewelry news combing, I read of one Maine man who creates jewelry from muscles (from the ocean—the kinds that come in shells; I’m not backing any bizarre fashions here!), which are first polished and then wrapped in a sterling silver bezel with a nickel backing. Certainly unique!

Trends: 2008

In jewelry news, let’s explore the trends for 2008—shall we? Well there’s no better time than now to read up on such info. This year, hot jewelry includes gem-intensive, bold styles but simple rather than intricate.

Unique is fabulous, as always, so be on the lookout for something different. Even men will veer away from their sporadic diamond comfort zone and they’ll be joining in on the large colored stone trend in bracelets and rings.

The inspiration is the “Grace Kelly” look; the “less is more” notion. Unlike Grace Kelly, however, you’re going to want to bring color into the picture! Women will wear less fine jewelry, but what they will wear will be large, impressive and classic. Rather than layering on the bangles, go for one candy colored or diamond-studded cuff bracelet. Tone down on the number of rings you wear and pump up the chunky and unique cocktail ring.

Jump on the train, ladies. Get bright and bubbly for 2008!

Jewelry News: Heists Galore!

pearl strandSo what’s the latest scoop in jewelry news? Well…there’s good news and there’s bad news. We’ll start with the bad.

Jewelry heists from big to small time robberies seem to be all over the papers as of late. We’ve seen stories from stolen jewelry at fairs, Temecula (California) jewelry store robberies by jealous half-brothers and even cons to steal an old woman’s jewelry in Bethlehem. (Bethlehem, New Jersey to clear up any confusion.) It seems no place is safe for the jewelry merchant.

Now for the good news: the cops are hot on the trails of the thieves and have many already in custody. Some jewelry has been recovered, some has not, but the chase is on. One thieving duo was caught by leaving a fingerprint on a plastic bag at the scene of the crime—an outlet mall jewelry shop in Massachusetts.

There’s no real reason for this surge in jewelry heists; these crimes and not connected with one another. Maybe there’s something in the air? At least you know here at Bidz.com that you are getting the best deal for your dollar on non-stolen goods.

Nasdaq Down…How Did Jewelry Fare?

nasdaq chartAs reported yesterday in Investor’s Business Daily (IBD), the Nasdaq composite sank 1.6% at the end of the day. Of the 197 industry groups tracked by IBD only six ended the day with gains. Turns out one of those six was Retail/Wholesale-Jewelry.

That’s good news for us jewelry lovers as good jewelry news means we’ve made a good investment in our jewelry collections and can therefore justify our purchases. Of course, purchasing stock is one way to invest in jewelry, but actually purchasing jewelry is an investment in itself.

Jewelry is not like cars which lose value the moment they leave the lot. If you’ve ever wanted to purchase vintage jewelry you know this very well! Jewelry is made of recyclable material, so to speak, so really it can never lose its value. If a specific piece of jewelry is hideous, it can be melted down and recreated into a masterpiece. If it’s beautiful to begin with it can be auctioned or sold, oftentimes for more than you paid in the initial purchase.

Watch our online jewelry auction daily to find beautiful jewelry at even more beautiful prices and know that you have invested wisely!

Jewelry News: 2008 Trend Watch

cuff braceletWhat’s the hottest news on the jewelry front for 2008? According to jewelry news from the National Jeweler Network, 2008 will be all about the gem-intensive, bold styles.

Rather than layering on the bangles, go for one diamond-studded cuff bracelet. Tone down on the number of rings you wear and pump up the chunky and unique cocktail ring.

In the News: Lead in Children’s Jewelry

06160a.jpgIn jewelry news, Wall Street Journal writers Gordon Fairclough and Kathy Chen report today that the Sierra Club, America’s oldest and largest environmentalist organization, has notified 10 U.S. companies that dangerous levels of lead have been located within the children’s toys and jewelry they are distributing and, “that [the Sierra Club] will sue after 60 days if the firms don’t file reports with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.”

The fight against lead-containing products today is widening. Lead is known to cause brain damage, organ failure and, in extreme cases, death. EPA.gov explains the harms of lead. They write, “Lead is a highly toxic metal that was used for many years in products found in and around our homes. Lead may cause a range of health effects, from behavioral problems and learning disabilities, to seizures and death. Children 6 years old and under are most at risk.”

Much of the lead-bearing product is produced and manufactured in China. U.S. companies that have recalled toys and children’s and baby jewelry products in the past year due to claims of lead containment include RC2, Target and Dollar General.
