The Midas Touch

ice cream

King Midas may have experienced something like this when his unenviable curse of the Midas touch turned his food into inedible gold. Serendipity in New York could have eased his hunger pains with this very edible $1000 gold drizzled dessert.

“Start with 5 scoops of premium vanilla ice cream made from Tahitian Vanilla beans and Madagascar Vanilla and cover them in 23k edible gold leaf. Drizzle the whole affair with the world’s most expensive chocolate, Amedei Porceleana and chunks of rare Chuao Chocolate. Then suffuse the sundae with Parisian candied fruit, gold dragets, truffles and Marzipan Cherries. Place a tiny bowl of Grand Passion Caviar on top and serve in a baccarat Harcourt crystal goblet with an 18k gold spoon. For the finishing touch, add a gilded sugar flower by Ron Ben-Israel.”

Bidz.com, Inc. BIDZ, a leading online auctioneer of jewelry, today announced that its securities have been cleared for public quotation on the OTC Bulletin Board. The common stock begun trading on May 1, 2007, under the symbol BIDZ.

David Zinberg, Chief Executive Officer, commented, “We are very pleased to announce the clearance of quotations of our stock on the OTC Bulletin Board. We are excited to have reached this milestone and to provide liquidity for our shareholders. As a leading online jewelry auction site, we will look to further build brand awareness, increase profitability and continue to generate value for our shareholders.”

In a press release dated April 24, 2007, the Company reported first quarter earnings as summarized below. Net sales increased 29% versus the first quarter of 2006 to $45 million, and net income increased 4% to $3.4 million.

Additionally, the Company expects revenues for the second quarter of 2007 to be in the range of $38-$40 million, and anticipates income before income tax of $2.8-$3.3 million. Historically, the second and third quarters are seasonally weaker periods for jewelry sales. For the full year of 2007, the Company expects revenues to be in the range of $170-$180 million, a 33% year-over-year increase at the midpoint, and gross margin of approximately 24-25% which the Company believes is appropriate for managing its business going forward. The Company anticipates income before income tax for 2007 of $13-$14 million, a 145% year-over-year increase at the midpoint.

The Company also noted that it found a material weakness relating to the recording of merchandise inventory and cost of goods sold. This disclosure does not change the results and outlook that were reported in the Company’s press release dated April 24, 2007 and that are summarized above. The Company immediately proceeded to develop new procedures to address the deficiency and expects that they will remediate this weakness over the course of the next quarter. The Company plans to file its Quarterly Report on Form 10Q by May 15, 2007.

Charm Your Graduate With a Charm Bracelet

“Charms go back as far as the Neolithic era where man would pick up an unusual stone or piece of wood and carry it with him to ward off his enemies. Elaborate jewelry made of precious stones and metals emerged during the age of the Egyptian Pharaohs. It was during this time that the first recognizable charm bracelets and necklaces first appeared.”

tiffany 3
Pictured here is a diamond/platinum charm bracelet by Tiffany and Co.. Charm bracelets, like all jewelry arrangements and styles have gone in an out of vogue throughout history. Today they are making a comeback, and as all trends these days, the celebrities are setting the pace.

In Egyptian times Charm bracelets were almost an obsession and meant also to serve as “ID” tags for the gods to guide the deceased to his proper home.

“Like people of many ancient civilizations, the citizens of ancient Egypt lived very short lives by today’s standard - 30 to 40 years on average. With so little time on earth, they obsessively prepared for a prosperous life after death. Charm bracelets played a significant role in the preparation process. Charm wrist and neck bracelets were not only coveted as protective shields and signs of status in this life, they were also worn as ID tags to help the Gods guide the wearer and his/her possessions to the proper status level in the afterlife. Kind of an “if found, please return to” note from home.”

For those so inclined and with a deep pocket, you can have your home theater done up in gold. They didn’t think to embed diamonds but, no doubt, if asked, I’m betting they’d be willing to throw a few on the remote.

Diamonds on Wheels

diamond mercedes

No one has ever published a confirmation that this Mercedes SL55 is actually diamond encrusted but since we have seen gold plated cars as well as platinum, it perhaps isn’t too far fetched to imagine that these diamonds are real.

Which raises many questions. Who in the world would insure it, where would you park it and when you get tired of it, can the diamonds be converted to jewelry?

We love diamonds at bidz.com too and though you can’t drive our diamonds you can sure drive your own bargain by bidding in our online jewelry auction selections.
