One stone you’ll see often while shopping for jewelry is agate. Agate was named by Greek philosopher Theophrastus after he discovered it sometime during the 4th and 3rd centuries, BC. It is a type of quartz and is considered a semi-precious stone. It is characterized by fine grains and bright coloring.
Some varieties of agate have been popular for thousands of years. In fact, the stones have been obtained from Sicily for over 3,000 years! If there is one thing that does not change over time it is the raw beauty of nature and the appreciation we hold for that natural beauty.
Agate stones can be found as nodules in volcanic rock and ancient lava. The stone can be found in many colorful and unique varieties, from striped to spotted to banded. The stone is also often hollow and known by many as simply “geodes.” You may remember studying these in elementary school (I know I do!).
Agate was traditionally believed to cure scorpion stings and snake bites. It was also believed to soothe the mind (cure headaches), calm violent weather (lightning and thunder storms) and secure power to the powerful.

Take for example this fabulous 14K white gold necklace which features an immense 73.39 carat weight teardrop shaped purple amethyst. The coloring and cut are beautiful together, but the sizing of the piece is what makes this unique and desirable.
This amethyst pendant hangs on a circle of black agate (3.19 carats) and on a 17.75 inch white gold chain. The necklace also features 96 round cut white diamonds the pendant and two additional round cut purple amethyst stones.

This weekend I was watching a special on TV about fabulous lake houses of the rich and famous while I washed dishes in my kitchen. One of the lake houses that was featured on the program was owned by some baseball star and his newscaster wife, who was more than happy to show off the—and I quote—“rock” on her ring finger.
Indeed, her wedding ring was nothing to sneeze at (as my grandma would say), but when it comes to showing off rocks, there is more out there than a fabulous diamond.
Take this gorgeous necklace, for example. This piece is made entirely of colorful, multi-shaped agate stones. These are true rocks, baby! The total carat weight of this necklace is 402.00 carats—the total count from 51 agate stones.
Necklaces are certainly the easiest way to pull of a chunky piece of jewelry. Matched with a little black dress or solid colored blouse and jeans, this necklace will turn an outfit into an ensemble.
