Aquamarine is a gemstone we all know and love. It is considered a mineral and is named after the Latin phrase aqua marina, or “water of the sea.”
This beautiful gem glows a delicate blue or turquoise coloring, hence the relation to sea water. It is also closely related in makeup to emerald. Technically, aquamarine is a transparent variety of beryl and is known to be found in yellow, pink and white varieties.
Aquamarine is the official birthstone of the month of March, as well as the gemstone associated with the 19th wedding anniversary. During the Middle Ages the stone was believed to hold the magical abilities to cure poison. Anciently, sailors toted the crystals to ensure a safe journey and safe return home. Sailors also believed mermaid’s fins to be made of aquamarine. I’m not sure how they thought the mermaids could swim…perhaps this is where the “drunken sailor” in them came out.
We often feature pieces with aquamarines in our jewelry auctions here on Bidz.com. Check the auctions daily to find the perfect pieces to add to your jewelry collection.

Valentine’s day just passed, but it’s not to late, or too early, to get a beautiful pair of earrings for the lady in your life. These superb diamond and aquamarine earrings would have been perfect. If they hadn’t been snatched up immediately that is.
Featuring diamonds and aquamarines and carrying a combined carat total weight of 2.97, these earrings are absolutely gorgeous. Made from 14K white gold, the pair weighs just 5.2-grams and utilize a post lock.
They have two massive pear-shaped aquamarine earrings each with a 2.5ctw. In ancient times, aquamarines were said to be able to preserve youth and health while promising peace and tranquility. Perhaps its the sky blue color of these beauties, because I’m certainly feeling tranquil at the moment
It’s a good thing that everybody loves diamonds, because these earrings have lots of them. Forty-eight to be exact, all with a 0.47ctw. They are each round in shape with a Wesselton top and are tinted white to slightly white.
The other beautiful aspect of these earrings was how much the winning bidder saved on the auctions. With a suggested price of $2999, they were won from Bidz.com for the low price of $214.
