The family of six brothers and three sisters emigrated from Latvia in the early 1900’s. Having apprenticed at a Faberge workshop in Russia, two of the brothers had extensive experience with platinum, a new metal at that time. Another brother was skilled at tool making. Together, they were able to establish a self-contained company where quality could be monitored at all stages.

What exactly is the cabochon cut? I’ve features several pieces of fine jewelry in the Bidz.com blog over the past few months which happen to have cabochon cut gems, so why not explain what this cut really is?
The Encyclopedia Britannica website defines the cabochon cut as the “method of cutting gemstones with a convex, rounded surface that is polished but unfaceted. Opaque, asteriated, iridescent, opalescent, or chatoyant stones are usually cut en cabochon. The back of a normal cabochon-cut stone is flat, but it may be hollowed to lighten the colour.”
In other words, the cabochon cut is a smooth, rounded cut with only the gem’s natural shine and coloring to create a glow and/or sparkle.
This ring I’m showing here, which is currently in our online jewelry auction, boasts a 48.24 carat weight cabochon cut ruby. That’s huge! Surrounding the stone are 92 round cut fancy intense yellow enhanced diamonds and 48 round cut blue sapphires. In other words: this is the ultimate cocktail ring!
Unless you prefer to pay the retail price tag of $9,699.00 I suggest you get your bidding on—pronto!

When I saw this necklace, the first thing I thought of was India. Indian jewelry is known to be bright, colorful and very rich with precious gems. Yellow gold is practically a staple in Indian jewelry, as are rubies.
This gorgeous necklace has a total carat weight of 51.00 carats. The item was labor intensive handmade to perfection. Featured on this piece are four white freshwater pearls, about 11-11.5mm in diameter. The necklace holds 44.00 carats worth of magenta red rubies and 7.00 carats worth of fabulous, dark blue sapphires.
This necklace is decorated with 22K yellow gold and has a lobster claw closure. Because of the quality and carat weight of the piece, this necklace is valued at nearly $11,500.00 retail! It is truly a beautiful piece of jewelry and the perfect accent to the Bohemian revolution in today’s style world.

Of course the total carat weight of a piece of jewelry does not fine jewelry make, but it certainly adds to the glamour. And when a piece of jewelry is in fact made of quality gems, the carat weight essentially seals the deal when it comes to desirability and value of the piece.
Sapphires are most commonly known in their brilliant, bright blue variety. This bracelet, however, features midnight blue sapphires—66 of them oval cut and set in sterling silver. These particular sapphires seem to have more of the midnight than the blue—they are a gorgeous, deep blue and group together for an absolutely stunning outcome.
The bracelet is 7.5 inches in length and has an immense total carat weight of 30.70 carats. Like I said, the carat weight can definitely up the desirability and value of jewelry when done in such a chic way!
