This great piece by David Mann reminds the viewer of the good old days, while at the same time bringing them to the reality of the present. The piece depicts Al’s Barbershop, which happens to have moved location. The cheeky barbershop pillar is old and worn and sits opposite a broken window pane. It’s a piece that keeps the viewer thinking of the story behind the shop.

A native of Kansas City, Missouri, Mann started drawing and painting at an early age. His first passion was custom cars and his first job was as an automobile painter. In 1963, David brought some of his artwork to the Kansas City Custom Car Show. There a biker took an interest in Mann’s artwork and with Dave’s permission, forwarded it to Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, a pop art icon who was then the publisher of one of the worlds first custom motorcycle magazines, Choppers. David Mann was an American artist famous for his paintings of motorcycles and biker culture. Most of his famous works, he created for the motorcycle industry, which were mostly featured in magazines. Some of Mann’s art has been seen on the television show American Chopper. An episode was devoted to the building of a custom motorcycle that would honor his body of works. The bike was entitled the “David Mann” bike. Mann’s health started to decline in the early 2000’s and after a lengthy illness, he died in Kansas City in 2004.”

Late American artist David Mann’s work is known for its creativity. Mann had a wonderful way of taking the ordinary and making it more extraordinary.

It reminds me of “The Truman Show.” Remember that one? Jim Carey, 1998? Television’s love child raised in a pretend world. Remember at the end when Truman has faced his fears of the ocean to sail away to the real world? And then he finds it—well, technically he runs into a wall which is painted to look like the sky.
