Settlers were once drawn to Canada with the prospect of striking it rich with gold. Many were successful in their efforts. But the gold industry there dried up years ago, with the last mine closing in 2005.
Now the diamond industry is set to bring a huge influx of cash into the Northwest Territories. Prompted by a geologists exhaustive search for the most precious gem, three mines now exist in the area and more are popping up soon.
The industry is serving to pump money into the frontier and industrialize the area. It is also removing the stigma of blood diamonds by providing diamonds that aren’t mined in conflict areas.
