What is always so wonderful about jewelry are the myths, legends and stories that a piece of special jewelry carries with it.
“Pendants in themselves have been around as long as jewelry has, but the late 16th century saw a rise in a peculiarly unique type of pendant.

During the Renaissance, the Baroque pearl became fashionable. A Baroque pearl is one that is irregular in shape, and at this time the larger and more irregular, the better.”Jewelers had a tough time deciding what to do with them. They began transforming them into the bodies of creatures like dragons, dolphins and sea monsters. These are the “Monstrous” animals of the Renaissance.
To your right is the Canning Jewel, the most famous of “Monstrous Animal” jewels.
“…so named after the 2nd Viscount Canning, who bought it in India in about 1860. It now resides in the Victoria & Albert Museum. It is a gorgeous jewel, 4 inches long, with a large pearl in the shape of his torso. He is made of gold and enamel, studded with rubies and diamonds. A masterpiece of Renaissance goldsmthing…”

“A local jewelry store known for its work with Colorado gems recently acquired some of the most rare jewels mined in the state - diamonds.

Krivanek Jewelers recently received a handful of diamonds from the Kelsey Lake diamond mine, one of four diamond mines in the United States. The mine is northwest of Fort Collins, near the Wyoming border and has been closed since 1999. It was the last of the active commercial diamond mines to close.
[…]
Getting the diamonds was lucky, Krivanek said, adding they were really fortunate to acquire them. During production, the diamonds were rare, and eight years after production they have become increasingly so.
[…]
The cut diamonds could be set in Colorado gold or accented with aquamarine, the Colorado state gem, for a uniquely Colorado piece of jewelry.”

“Sarah Jessica Parker’s choker-like necklace gathers width as it reaches towards the front of her throat, where a center gem-studded focal lies. The necklace positively glittered every time she moved her head. The “layers” of gems in different shades kept the glitz from being overdone–it was just enough to make you stop and pay attention.”
about.com

The choker style necklace is thought to have originally come into vogue when jewelers during the French revolution started copying the fad of young women wearing red ribbons tightly around their throat in protest on behalf of those who were guillotined. Centuries have since erased such dire connotations as chokers have become a fashionable staple in every jewelry box.
And as you can see here, recent sightings of popular celebrities such as Jessica Parker ( pictured here) are increasing the choker’s fashion status. Please enjoy browsing through Bidz.com’s glittering auction selection of necklaces, where you will also fine many gorgeous choker styled pieces.

In the Roaring Twenties women bobbed their hair and sleek strands of pearls were worn by the yard. The thirties returned a bit of gentility to women and jewelry became more feminine and exquisitely ornate.
In the forties jewelry became more casual only to return with the ostentation of the fifties with jewelry designed to reflect the fabulous beauties of the day such as Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Loren.
The sixties saw men wearing jewelry for the first time in centuries while hippies wore anything and everything in the name of free expression (if not good taste). In the eighties and nineties jewelry became larger than life and gold predominated.
Today there are no rules and with the internet, even small jewelers and designers can offer their personal jeweled visions to the world at large.
Bidz.com offers the gamut of jewelry styles from brazen bling to understated elegance.
