The oldest surviving pearl necklace is 2000 years old. Pearls are one of the oldest treasured gems on earth and found universally. It is the only jewel to come from a living creature.
In ancient times, pearls were worn as a symbol of wealth and as a ward against bad fortunes. They have also symbolized the purity of a woman.
