Michael Daniels offers rings, pendants, bracelets, and earrings in Mokume, seeking inspiration in nature. When it touches the skin, the colors change subtly according to the wearer’s body chemistry, expressing each person’s individuality. What is always so wonderful about jewelry are the myths, legends and stories that a piece of special jewelry carries with it.
“Pendants in themselves have been around as long as jewelry has, but the late 16th century saw a rise in a peculiarly unique type of pendant.

During the Renaissance, the Baroque pearl became fashionable. A Baroque pearl is one that is irregular in shape, and at this time the larger and more irregular, the better.”Jewelers had a tough time deciding what to do with them. They began transforming them into the bodies of creatures like dragons, dolphins and sea monsters. These are the “Monstrous” animals of the Renaissance.
To your right is the Canning Jewel, the most famous of “Monstrous Animal” jewels.
“…so named after the 2nd Viscount Canning, who bought it in India in about 1860. It now resides in the Victoria & Albert Museum. It is a gorgeous jewel, 4 inches long, with a large pearl in the shape of his torso. He is made of gold and enamel, studded with rubies and diamonds. A masterpiece of Renaissance goldsmthing…”

Mother’s Day is around the corner and a heart pendant seems a particularly appropriate gift to say thank you for a mother’s love. These are executed by “blue collar artist” Heins Brummel.
As a self taught, blue collar studio artist, I build things and design systems…
synthesizing the tradition of “old world” skills with the conceptual qualities, design vocabulary and formal requirements of “fine art”.
Essentially, precious and non-precious matter alchemize into exquisite objects that transcend and beg to redefine the idiom “jewelry” or personal adornment into the realm of art, big ideas manifested in small sculpture. Small sculpture in a macro world.
