Your first question is probably, “What exactly is spinel?”

Spinel is a beautiful stone which has a similar chemical makeup to rubies and can be found in Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand. Spinel can be found in red, blue, mauve, green, brown and black varieties. In fact, the red spinels are referred to as spinel-rubies and were often confused with real rubies in ancient times.
